Where is Mission San Gabriel Arcángel?

Mission San Gabriel Arcángel is in the city of San Gabriel, at 429 S. Junipero Serra Drive. The National Park Service gives a nearby address, 428 South Mission Drive, for the mission.

The mission says it sits 9.8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Plaza Park is just outside the grounds; a restored portion of the Chapman Millrace, part of the area’s historic water-delivery system, can be seen there.

Founded on September 8, 1771, by Franciscan friars Benito Cambon and Angel Somera under the presidency of Junípero Serra, it was the fourth of California’s 21 missions. The mission moved from its original site to its present location in 1775, after frequent flooding at the first site.

The church is the central architectural highlight, with a fortress-like appearance and design elements borrowed from a cathedral and former mosque in Córdoba, Spain, according to the National Park Service.

Look for the church’s espadaña, or bell wall, which holds bells cast as early as 1795. Inside, the Stations of the Cross are thought to have been painted by Native neophytes in the 1820s.

The mission’s visitor offerings also include a newly curated museum exhibit and a Native American garden. Since the site remains an active Catholic parish, it serves both as a place of worship and as a historic destination.
